evaluation

What I did?
Designed an existing website which is fashion based and beauty based and then designed an application for the iPhone from this. Also I created a flash animation which explains the application as a way of promoting the application. I was helped by a graphics student on this!

Why I did it?
I wanted to explore layouts further and I wanted to experiement with designing layouts on a much smaller scale- iPhone. I also wanted to broaden my knowledge in various software and become confident with it.

How I did it?
Using mainly InDesign and Photoshop to create layouts, and Illustrator and Flash to create the animation.

Outcome:
A design pitch, press release, presentation and full website and application design layout. Also a promotional animation explaining the application and its features.

Likes:
I have not really liked this project, unfortunately I hit a part where I got completely fed up as I have no interest in this commercialised side to fashion, however I have enjoyed playing with layouts, I have really enjoyed designing things on a smaller scale and I have enjoyed the marketing side to research also and the work experience that I have done during this project. I have also really enjoyed using flash and being an art director! Working with another student from Graphics was really good as he helped me to create what I wanted in my head!

Dislikes:
I dislike the whole concept and I am disheartened by this fact, however I am just going to get on with it and use it as a piece of portfolio work to use to show that I am adaptable and use it to show my skills in InDesign and Photoshop.

Things that went wrong:
My computer would not let me download a copy of flash catalyst because it is too old and I would have to buy more ram- as I couldn't afford this I felt that I wasn't going to get enough marks, however, my cries for help were answered after sending out numerous text messages and a third year Graphics student managed to spare me some time on sunday evening to help me to create the flash animation at the last minute!!!!! Hero! I will make them dinners forever more. I have also tried to make the most out of what I have done to make an element of my project interactive through creating a hand held press release that the people who I would pitch to can have something to hold and touch. I have also been collaborating with a graphics designer throughout to try and pull something together even if it is a few skills!

Skills:
I a fully confident in InDesign and Photoshop now and I am really pleased. However I am sad to say that I am not fully confident with flash on my own, but after working with the graphics design student I have more knowledge than I did before!!! :-)

What I have learnt?
I have had a huge learning curve in this project- I am glad that I have realised this however as it has allowed me to learn about myself and what I like. I have realised that I am not interested in commercialised side to fashion and what to focus more on the styles that I like. Working with Glenn really helped me realise this. I have also learnt alot about the software and that I quite like a bit of art direction!

What I would change?
I would change the whole concept if I could but instead of a more commercial fashion site I would like to have changed it to a urban/ outdoorsy/ street wear guide for women as I feel that not enough help is given to women and girls who like this style. Even though I did not like this project I am really glad I did it as it shows that even though I do not like something I am not going to give up on it so easily. I also am glad as it has allowed me to realise what routes I want to pursue in further projects and career options.

flash animation

After so much trouble panicking over flash I managed to rope in some help from a 3rd year graphics student- Ben Strowman, after much debate and chat over how the animation would look and whether it would be interactive or not we decided to get going.

Origionally I was going to have my animation interactive- but then Ben told me that it would be quite "samey" as once the user got to the page they would just have to go back to the start and click another, go back to the start etcetera. Then he showed me some work by Gustav Johansson, who has done a few animations, after watching them we came up with the idea of the animation promoting the app, so it will go through each page and explaining how the app works and what the features are! This is another way of promoting the launch also as I am thinking of putting the launch date at the end...!? Click the link and scroll down to these...

OKAY SO....

To start off we had to save each page as a separate file and put them into illustrator- as the way i wanted the animation to be it would need to be separated images and also you cannot put an indesign image into flash.

Firstly we have to import the object from illustrator to the flash library, drag the object from the library onto the stage in key frame 1- (key frame one is on the time line - so imagine in photoshop the difference layers- key frames are like this!!)

Drag into key frame 1 and make sure the object is off the stage- right click and convert to symbol and choose "movie clip" and then you inset the key frame further along in the timeline and then you drag the object onto the stage, right click between the key frames and click create motion tween.

Then we have repeated this in different ways on each image and text!

press release

I want to have something interactive in my presentation- i am thinking going to put my press release together and print them out onto an image of the iPhone like a little leaflet almost. Along with this i will print out images of the application so it is a hand held guide to the new release.

Here is the press release...

website progress...

So the website and the app are both designed ready for the pitch/ hand in. just have to do the animation of how the app would look like working which will be hard work as i am not sure how to even use flash- i am going to do one in photoshop and then also look for help from animators and jamie- if i can get them then i will use both but if not then i will just use the photoshop animation!

on friday i am going to play around with the links for the website and things on dreamweaver so that you can see how it will be when it is launced but as it is a pitch i do not have to have the website up and running, i will be showing demonstrations of it but i will not need to have it running online yet- i am going to also create design boards with the layouts displayed on them to make a proffessional pitch. i am considering printing the flyers also.

ANNNYYYWWAAAYYYS

here are the images of the complete website. :-)
users enter their details they have set when they registered with the website so that the site can get their saved items in their wardrobe!!!
the can drag items into the "changing room
here they can then choose their size model if the need to change it from their setting- this allows them to see what the clothes are like on a model their size!!!
here the user can choose a colour pallete which the outfit generator will use to create an outfit
a list of prices and a small paragraph explaining the outfit and trend and any tips too. the users can buy save or share any information they have on the site.
shop section- the site will base their shopping on what is in their wardrobe- eg it will monitor their activity so it will know their favourite shops and also sizes and most viewed items eg if a person likes shoes from topshop so the site will have topshop as the first shop etcetera.... if you know what i meannnn?
you can navigate easily at the bottom if you want to!
scroll between rails of clothing

brief info about the girls in the events section

the talk section is quite similar to twitter- i got my main inspiration for it from there. due to the quick nature of just posting your thoughts- online friends can reply back to these quickly and instantly.
beauty tips section is the same as the iphone app as it will have video clips each day of the new beauty tip/ advice!
